It’s the Little Things: Week Twelve

My husband & I have always agreed that if we could make a few minor changes in our favor, we would just pack all our shit up & move right to the country.  We both love the outdoors so very much & really do spend every moment we can out there.  I mean, the thought of having an excessive amount of land to run free with a herd of kids is way too appealing to both of us.  We have had the conversation more than once, it’s obviously the lack of a Target or a mall close enough that’s really holding me back. 😉

Waverly Maye is no different, being “out-side” is her happy place.  So much so that recently, getting her inside for a bath or dinner has become pretty painful.  You know, those moments that end in the legs flying kind of meltdowns (tell me we aren’t the only ones who have experienced those).  So in an effort to keep everyone’s sanity, my husband spent all last week constructing a screened-in porch right off our kitchen.  It has her playhouse right in the center of it, all of her favorite toys, & best of all, a door with a latch.  We call it the “Waverly cage”, anything for our outdoor girl.

This past weekend, we had a birthday party at a local farm that we were obviously so excited for.  I knew Waverly would love it & the icing on top of the birthday cake was that we actually had our rehearsal dinner there for our wedding.  How perfect to take our “spirited” sweet girl back & let her wander free, explore, & play with the animals all morning long. We had the best time. 🙂
With all this extra time outside lately & way more opportunity for Waverly to be the wild child she is, I am both impressed & scared out of my mind daily.  She  has learned to climb like a bad-ass & does it all of the time, loves to swing but only with her head laid all the way back to add in the extra fear-factor, & while the other kids at the park are timid at the slides, I have to literally hold her back from not barreling down them by herself.  We have had more than our fair share of falls (like maybe 10 a day), she is now rocking quite the collection of cuts & bruises to go along with her wardrobe.  And on a side note, lately each time she falls she immediately says “I sorry”.  It’s so completely adorable & obviously always melts me.  I can’t even believe how many new words she is learning by the day (& maybe even the hour), it really reminds me that we need to check ourselves & the nonsense we are saying around the house now.  That “I sorry” could turn into “Oh shit” really quickly.
I love her so much & can’t wait for an entire spring & summer outdoors with her.  The countdown to my summer break begins now (acceptable, right?), it’s 9 weeks & I am one happy mama.

Oh my goodness! She is so cute! My older two kiddos love being outside too. And the bigger the mess is, the more fun they have! I've actually decided not to overseed the bare spots in our back yard (we only have two months left here anyway) because the kids have too much fun making mud out of the dirt!

Oh my goodness….I LOVE these pictures of her!!! I'm here to tell you that you CAN survive without a Target/Hobby Lobby/Mall being an hour away. Sure, it sucks when you want to throw together a quick craft project but realize you need a little something from Michael's first…but you learn to deal. We typically just group all of our shopping/errand running into one day and try to make one trip every week or every other week. You learn to go with a mission, list in hand, and we always end up being able to squeeze in a little extra shopping/browsing…and we always have lots of fun! Sadie always gets super excited to go "shoppin'" 🙂 It makes you look for more simple things (aka things that aren't 50 miles away) to occupy your time and I think that's what I love most about country life! I seriously wish that we lived close enough for the girls to play because they are so similar and seem to enjoy the same things!

    I. am. SO. happy that it's finally "outdoors" weather! Kiernan looooves playing out in the grass already and there are so many fun outdoors things I want to do with her. It's so nice of your husband to build a screened-in porch! I hope you'll share pictures 🙂

So so so cute! Love the boots! Lily is obsessed with being outside too. Complete bend in half tantrum anytime we have to go inside…even if it is for a potty break. So ridiculous. Ha! Such is the life of girls, I suppose.

She is too cute with her boots and tied shirt!

  6. April 16, 2014 / 1:16 pm

So sweet! Love that cute little shirt too! That tie! Oh my goodness. Oh and don't worry, you aren't the only one who had the meltdowns. The other morning I brought Mason downstairs, offered him juice, and he started crying and screaming like I had done the most awful thing. Cried and buried his head in the couch. It was time to leave, so we got in the car, I gave him his waffle, and when he was done, offered him juice and he drank it right up! Kids.

She is so cute! And she looks so happy to be outside!

The screened in porch sounds awesome! I hope you'll share pics! We are practically living outside now too…Liam already has a bit of a farmer's tan. 🙂

That wardrobe of hers is out.of.this.world!!!

  10. April 16, 2014 / 2:35 pm

"The Waverly Cage" haha love it and love that your hubby is constructing it! I adore being in the country- I grew up on over 300 acres and our new home now sits on only 10 but it is in town (if that makes sense) Ya'll are looking 1005 adorable as usual!

  11. April 16, 2014 / 2:57 pm

That outfit and those pigtails! So cute!!!

  12. April 16, 2014 / 5:07 pm

Hahahaha! I love this post so much. I think Waverly and Mac would be BFF if they ever met up. Two of a kind! I love that she's so fearless! What a fun spirited little lady! You are going to have your hands full with that one (in the best possible way, of course).

  13. April 16, 2014 / 5:15 pm

she is just absolutely darling!! i love her little outfit so stinking cute

  14. April 16, 2014 / 5:21 pm

Too perfect! I hear ya on the new words daily! Charli has added so many new phrases/sentences too. I REALLY need to work on my mouth slip ups… oops! hahaha! Good thing is she hasn't caught on to any of those! Phew! And I swear, Charli literally has a new bruise or scrap very day, so much so that when she doesn't, she still looks at me with the most pitiful eyes and says "ouie momma, boo boo"! And clearly there is no boo boo to be found! (I think she just wants the sympathy!) 😉

  15. April 16, 2014 / 5:32 pm

Haha! I love this! I mean. Seriously, how cute is she?!? But now I am definitely curious to see the cage. Lol

  16. April 16, 2014 / 6:22 pm

I need you to come style me. If I could look as cute as Waverly, I'd be a happy camper:) Love that your husband built a little porch for Waverly – so amazing that he can just do stuff like that so easily!

  17. April 16, 2014 / 7:04 pm

What a cutie! Owen is a total outside kid too. Whenever anyone is watching him for us we always tell them to just bring him out front (day or night!) for a bit to calm him down. Being outside is kind of like his love language!

  18. April 16, 2014 / 7:33 pm

I hear ya! Elin wants to be outside all the time! It's great but she is not a fan of coming inside which usually ends in a fuss!

  19. April 17, 2014 / 3:21 am

I love how much little ones love the outdoors. How do we lose that as we get older? I really hope they never do!

  20. April 17, 2014 / 8:42 pm

What a fun little party at the farm! I'd like to say that Mia would love that… but she's terrified of animals when they are on her level 🙂 If I'm holding her though, she's fine! Until she wants to get down and run around… then remembers there are animals on her level 😉
But she loooooves being outside, too! Jealous of your Waverly cage!! Genius idea!

  21. April 17, 2014 / 11:29 pm

Oh my gosh she is too cute!! She looks like such a big girl in that top and those pants! Don't even get me started on the boots!! Swoon!!

Waverly and my little man are kindred spirits. There isn't a day that goes by that we aren't outside – rain or shine. We also have a "cage" and some days it's the only thing that keeps everyone sane!
