It's the Little Things: Our Overnight "Getaway"

Sometimes I am convinced that crazy things happen to me (& only me), but then I realize that it's pretty much a given that nothing ever goes as planned once you have a kid.  Luckily they are incredibly worth it. :)
The hubs & I were all set for our overnight getaway Saturday morning, our bags were packed & the hotel reservation was set like it had been for a few weeks.  Long story short, we had a few unexpected conflicts that kept us in VB until late that afternoon.  Good news, all is well that ends well, everything (& everyone) are fine, but since it was so late, we had to cancel our reservation.  We did still take Waverly to my parents to stay the night, our Plan-B was to go to dinner & stay the night at our house.  Not quite the getaway we planned, yet still completely out of the ordinary for us!

Waverly did great, which made my mama heart a little sad, but mostly happy!  On the rare nights that we have left her with family (but still at our house), she has had a hard time with the change in her bedtime routine.  This time, she didn't even ask for us, slept the entire night without waking up, & even slept in way later than she does at our house lately.  I think the complete change in scenery, plus her grandparents, kept her busy enough to not even notice we were gone!

As for us, it really was refreshing to have some quiet time alone (the house was crazy quiet, like weird quiet!), dinner at a place that didn't have chips on the table when we got there (though we do love some Mexican food), & lastly, time to reconnect.  Before we picked up Waverly the next day, we took some breakfast down to the beach.  We were so anxious to pick her up that we didn't stay too long, but those few relaxing moments really were worth it.  I definitely think that as a mom, one of my weaknesses is that I feel guilty whenever I even think about doing something by myself (that doesn't involve cleaning or doing something for Waverly at naptime).  It's little moments like these that makes me realize that a refreshed & rejuvenated mom is a better mom. :)

And the best part, we got to reunite with our baby girl!  There's nothing like being back with her after some time away, it was a lot like I feel each day when I am driving home from work.  The weather here lately has been feeling a lot like fall, pretty cloudy but perfect for walks on the beach.  One of her favorite things to do, I'm so excited for lots more of these in the next couple of weeks!

I hope you all are having a great week so far, we are halfway there!  Thanks to those who link-up each week, we are SO very thankful.  See this post if you need details.

  2. How great that you were able to slip away for a few days. As a parent it's so needed to hit the reset button and come back to the daily grind totally refreshed!

  3. Oh I love how you talked about feeling guilty for doing something by yourself. I think every mama feels this sometimes but it's so important to reconnect with our spouses or just ourselves and refresh!! So glad you guys had a good night together, even if plans didn't turn out the way you thought they would... I love that you made the best of it all! And yay for Waverly doing so well at her grandparents!

  6. Oh no! I'm sorry your weekend didn't go quite as planned but it sounds like you did a good job rolling with the punches and had the best time, just the two of you, anyway! I just love that last picture of Waverly... you can totally see how happy she is to be at the beach!

  8. girl, I left the house yesterday for two hours to get my hair done and missed my crazy little girl... but earlier that day I was about to pull my hair out-- so funny how they make you miss them the instant you leave them!

  9. I am the same way when it comes to thinking about doing something for myself/by myself. I feel so guilty! I'm sure that's unhealthy, but so far I have yet to get over it. It sounds like even though there was a change of plans, you all had a nice evening together. I can imagine the house would have been crazy weird quiet! I'm trying to work up the courage to "leave" Emerson for a night with his grandparents, but I can't seem to do it. yet. Again, unhealthy. Love the beach pictures!!

  10. So glad you guys got a chance to have some alone time. It's hard to fit it in - and I always feel guilty for leaving the little - but you are SO right. Sometimes we mamas just need some time to rejuvenate, so we can be even better!!! Loving your beach photos:)

  11. Glad you guys had fun! And I'm adopting that as my motto: a rejuvenated mom is a better mom. Probably something that all moms forget a lot of the time. ( I know I do!)

  14. I'm so glad you made the best of your time away from Waverly! I've thought about how odd it would be to have Mia spend the night at her grandparents and just be home with Eric... I haven't had the guts to experience that yet, ha ha! But I'm glad that we have gone away together so that I know I can survive without Mia and it is the SWEETEST feeling being reunited again!!

  17. As hard as it is...sometimes you just need your time alone. Even if it's at home. And if it makes you feel better, my husbands fam and ours took a weeklong vacay to Va Beach this summer...and it was glorious...and I didn't know until I got back that you are from there, I would've totally asked for tips =)
