Being Brickner : August 2013

Thursday, August 29, 2013

I'm not quite sure how this happened, but yesterday was the last day of my 20s.  So yes, in other words, today I turn THIRTY years old.  The age that I used to think was ridiculouosly old & reserved for boring grown-ups.  I swear just yesterday my girlfriends & I were praying that our fake IDs would work to get into the bars down at the oceanfront.
Lucky for us, most of the time, they did. :)
Yet if I'm honest, thirty feels pretty damn good.

For one, I have learned some major life lessons during this last decade.  Like, for example, how to do my make-up & to not let my friends cut my long hair (they really do mean the best but let's be honest, the only person who should have hair scissors should have gone to hair school.)  After 20 too many sunburns, I've learned to always use sunscreen and to re-apply all day long.  And in more recent years, I've definitely learned that I can't even come close to hanging like I used to.  A couple of adult beverages is definitely craved & needed on the weekends, but my college days of double rum & diets all night long are long gone.
Tell that to the mom who indulged in more than enough wine my first night out after baby & had to pay for it the following series of days.  Funny, Waverly Maye didn't seem to care that I had a week-long hangover.
Most importantly, I've learned that life is short & to fully take advantage of every moment.  To live life for me, do what makes me happy, and to not worry so much about what other people think. This little life we have created is so much more than I could ever have hoped for.  Our family of three is so lucky to have so many special people surrounding us, specifically our supportive family & friends who we know will be lifelong.

I am SUPER excited for a weekend full of celebrating!  Tonight is dinner with the family & tomorrow night is a night out with the girls that is long overdue.  And then on Saturday, the hubby & I will have our first entire night without Waverly Maye since she was born.  Definitely needed, but of course will be bittersweet.
PS - I will be sure to remember the adult beverage lesson while out with the girls.  Although something tells me we won't even make it past 9:00.  No one is exempt from this "getting older" thing so they are boring grown-ups now, too.
PPS - Waverly Maye, if you are reading this one day, don't even THINK about getting a fake ID.  Like ever.  I will totally figure you out.
Enjoy your weekend!

Trendy Tot Tuesday: Waverly's Weekend Wear

Our weekend was full of family, friends, & of course, fashion.  This walking 13-month old is happy to show off her stylish looks ... accessories & all.  The sidewalk at our park has become her own little catwalk.

On Saturday, us girls attended a shower to celebrate Waverly's cousin that will be joining our family very soon.  The color of the day was blue & as always, we were more than happy to dress in theme.

The rest of our weekend was spent enjoying the final days of this warm weather.  I'm super excited for fall & the holidays, but being able to spend our days taking in sweet summertime has been the best.  Waverly LOVES being outside & I do, too.

The sight of those baby rolls sure doesn't hurt.  I could seriously stare of those chubby legs all day long.  We won't be covering them until we have to.

Although obviously, when we do have to ... there are a couple of fall fashions hanging in that sweet girl's closet.  Post to come. :)
HAPPY TUESDAY, Don't forget to join Kelly, Megan & Lindsay for Trendy Tot Tuesdays!

Thirteen Month Update

YES, I have decided to continue Waverly Maye's monthly updates, even though my husband thinks I'm crazy.  They really are fun to do, rewarding to look back on, & another reason for a mini-photo session is always welcome around here.
Besides, let's face it, my husband thinks my need for constant festiveness & photo-taking is crazy, yet I think he really loves it.  Deep down.
Baby girl is now a whole THIRTEEN months old, making her a certified TODDLER!  Since she is such a little lady now, the format of her monthly updates will change.  But lucky for us, that sweet face has not!
Stats:  28 inches (5th percentile; YES, she is a shorty but that just means she can fit into her clothes for longer!) & 20 pounds.
Current Words & Other Milestones:  Momma is definitely the most used word in her current vocabulary, and yes, that makes this momma very happy!  She says it all the time, whenever she needs anything at all.  Smart girl, she knows who makes things happen!  Her other favorite word is bye-bye, which she also uses constantly, to both people in the stores or her toys when they go in the toy bin.  And yes, dada is now being used more & more, this daddy's girl even has attached the word to her favorite man.  Other words are Bogger (our dog) & mine.  Waverly has a voice and let me tell ya, she LOVES to use it!  And as previously posted, Waverly is now a WALKER!
Teeth & Sleep:  Currently, she has THREE whole teeth and one on the way.  Waverly Maye is a rock star each night and goes down for about 13-14 hours straight.  One of my favorite moments of the day is definitely the morning, when I go get that sweet face from her crib and she immediately wants to play (diving into her mattress about 20 times in a row.)  We were at two solid naps, but I am working on getting that down to one long nap in the afternoon for the fall.
Favorite Foods:  Still pretty much the same!  Waverly loves waffles and would eat them for breakfast, lunch & dinner if she could.  Her current habit is to suck the syrup out of each piece before she eats it.  Totally my child!  She also loves blueberries, turkey, strawberries, goldfish, chicken & potatoes.
Favorite Toys & Activities:  Her wub-nub (paci with a stuffed animal attached) is her number one companion when she is sleeping.  When we go to get Waverly from her crib, she is sitting with each of the five that we currently have.  Trouble ahead when we attempt to take a paci from this lady, I know.  Other faves of the moment are her teepee, kitchen, shopping cart, & radio flyer.  She LOVES to be on the move.  ALL the time.
Least Favorite Activities:  Being still, getting her diaper changed, & getting dressed.  And at times of the day, Miss Independent hates being in the stroller and would rather push it herself.
Special Moments & Extra Comments:  Seriously, I can't even describe how obsessed with this thirteen month old I am.  This month has been SO much fun and she is definitely her own little person now, with the BIGGEST, most contagious personality.  I loved everything about this month and yes, it was the best one yet. :)

Five on Friday

I am super excited to be joining up with some lovely ladies for my first FIVE ON FRIDAY  ... almost as excited as I am that it actually is Friday, my favorite day of the week. :)
I have been loving reading all the fun Friday posts!  Here are five of my own current favorites, although obviously, I could include WAY more than that.
Waverly Maye & her ONE-year old self.!  It has been three weeks since that milestone birthday, and I am convinced that these have been the best days of her life so far!  Waverly is now walking so fast that it's pretty much a run & learning new words by the day.  Her personality, drama & all, is out full force.  I'm pretty much obsessed with everything about this age & this little person that she is becoming before my eyes.

More to come in her official THIRTEEN month post on Monday!

Speaking of this one-year old's birthday ... would it be complete without official photos to commemorate the occasion?!  Not in our world.  Even though the girl already has more pictures of her documented than many do in their entire life, I had to seize the opportunity.  We got a sneak peek this week and are so excited!

A cute baby, tee-pee AND a feather headband?  I'm not sure it gets much better than that.
Thank you, Nicole, we can't wait to see the rest!

It has now been almost three months since we closed on our house & many of the big projects are completed, so now it's time to get decorating.  So exciting, I know, but also a little overwhelming.  I can style an outfit with my eyes closed, but for some reason, styling my home is way harder.  And not to mention, a little more expensive.  Can Forever 21 can a home goods line?!  In the meantime, I did get this rug for our living room for $60 and am pretty damn proud of myself for this find.

Boots for Babies. Fall fashion just happens to be my favorite, mainly because of the return of boots after summer.  And now that Waverly is officially a walker, the possibilities for footwear are even greater.  I can't wait to see her little feet stomping around in these minnetonkas in the upcoming months.

Snuggles & cuddles from my baby girl.  Just as fast as Waverly has become even more mobile, lucky for me, she is showing the sweetest affectionate side. I told my husband that at several different occasions this week, I have closed my eyes to take in the moment because I never wanted to forget it.  She has learned to hug and lean her head into my shoulder AND has been giving kisses non-stop.  When we were on our morning run the other day, she grabbed my hand and wouldn't let go.  We literally held hands over the stroller for ten minutes.  Motherhood, I tell you ... BEST thing ever.

Enjoy your weekend, ladies!

Trendy Tot Tuesday: A Print & A Pop

 It happened again.
Waverly wore one of those outfits that I would totally rock, from head to toe, if ONLY it came in my size.  Although I am fully aware that I could not come close to pulling it off quite like my munchkin can.

I'm pretty sure that when I found out that I was expecting a girl, this was the exact image that came to my mind.  Only better.  That sweet face, strawberry-blonde hair, & little body in that PRINTed leopard romper with the POP of teal was about all I could handle.

I might have given this fashionable lady of the forest a million & one kisses that day.  Which is about one more than she usually gets. :)

Scenes from the Weekend

Three days is never enough for the weekend.  I feel like I am constantly struggling between being productive & getting things done around the house, or spending quality family time.
Which is why I am on the total "four day weekend" bandwagon, for everyone.  But that's for another day.

This weekend, we managed to be successful at both.  We made some major checks off the ever-expanding house to-do list, thanks to my bad ass husband.  He really has been working non-stop since we closed at the end of June to make this house a home.  Though I'm sure I don't always seem grateful (due to my Type-A nature & need for everything to be organized & ready like, yesterday), Waverly Maye & I are super lucky to call him ours. :)
On Saturday, me & my munchkin had a date to the park & to the farmers market.

It really is unbelievable how little we took advantage of all VB has to offer before Waverly Maye got here.  In our dating/engagement days, our weekends pretty much consisted of relaxing all day & the bars at night.  So yea, we definitely we had booze rather than babies on the brain.
After taking Waverly, I really can not believe I had never been to our farmers market.  Between the live music, homegrown food, local ice cream, & such nice people ... it was SO much fun.  I really would like to go back each weekend for the rest of my life if possible.  I don't think I'm the only one.

On Sunday, we attended a birthday party & fit in one more mommy & mini date before the weekend ended.  This time at the beach.

Did I mention baby girl loves the sand?

Or how much that I love her?

We hope that you all had a wonderful weekend!  We will be back tomorrow to talk fashion for Trendy Tot Tuesday. :)

Walking Waverly

There is no turning back now, Waverly Maye is walking!
Like full-on, big-girl status walking ... all the time, anywhere she needs to go.

I mentioned before that it actually all started on her birthday.  It did.  On the actual day, Waverly started with a few steps at our family dinner.  Then at her birthday party, with lots of family & friends in attendance, she busted out lots more.  My attention-loving daughter would wait for an audience for a big milestone like that one.

Ever since then, she has walked a little more each day.  Her zombie/drunken walk is so unbelievably cute, I am pretty much obsessed with it.  That, & the fact that she always likes to carry something in her hand for extra reassurance. (Note the stick above & foam tube below.)

It's now two weeks later, and Waverly Maye has become so confident in her walk, I'm pretty sure she may just step out our front door and go for a two-mile jog around the neighborhood.  This girl, she has stolen my heart.  I really do fall more in love with her everyday.

Happy Friday, friends!  Enjoy your weekend, I will be chasing after this sweet face. :)

Trendy Tot Tuesday: One-Piece Wonders

Let's face it.  No matter how much you love fashion, there is something to be said about a stylish look that you don't have to think too much about.  Looks that you can wear with ease, and ones that you can wear over & over again yet look different each time.
One-pieces do that for me.  I am a total romper in the summer, jumpsuit in the winter kind of girl.  The upside is how versatile & easy they are, the downside is when you have to go to the bathroom and are completely nude.
(Anyone ever had that experience?  Or is it just me?!)
Good thing Waverly Maye doesn't have to worry about that yet, so she has definitely been rocking her fair share of one-pieces in her first year of life.
She definitely looks more interested in the pinecones than her fashionable one-piece, I know.  But she really did love this look, I promise.
Here are some other one-piece wonders that we are currently LOVING!
All are fall-friendly and just happen to be from Baby Gap (one of our faves!.)  For other options, you can recycle your rompers for the summer with tights or a cardigan.  In the meantime, since it's still sweltering outside, we will be wearing ours with as little as possible.
We did have to include the leopard shoes, of course. :)
Thanks again to Kelly, Lindsey, and Kelly for the link-up.
Please join us each Tuesday for Trendy Tot Tuesday to talk fashion & all things style!

Summer Lovin'

After yet another successful summer weekend, I am trying to figure out how it can possibly be the middle of August?  Don't get me wrong, I love the changing of the leaves, the beginning of the holidays (obviously!), and best of all, skinny jean & boot weather.  Yet the first summer that Waverly Maye has officially taken part it has been one for the books.  So we are soaking in these last moments and taking advantage of all that sweet summertime has to offer.
Here are some of the current things we are LOVING this summer
1.  Popsicles - Now that we are homeowners, I suddenly have this urge to be domestic & really try to cook.  It must be that I really feel like a grown up now, so I might as well fully take on the role.  So far, so good ... almost.  I was super excited to make these watermelon popsicles for Waverly, and they were just as delicious as I thought they would be.  The only downfall was that the actual stick broke off almost immediately & we were forced to drink them from our pink striped straws.  It was a complete mess but oh so fun.  Doesn't everyone eat drink popsicles with a matching sequin pink headband?
2 - Water Table - Honestly, I had never even heard of a water table until this summer.  But now that I know about this genius idea & have one of my own (or Waverly does), we have been taking full advantage.  Waverly Maye is a total water baby, so she would obviously love a table covered in water that she can splash around in.  Plus, we can do it right outside our front door.  Total win.

3 - Ocean Breeze Water Park - I have posted about our love for the water park before, but our summer list could not be complete without mentioning it.  Buying season passes this year was the best decision ever!  In between all of the kids to play with & the shallow water that she can walk around in, Waverly is in complete heaven there.  Plus, we can pack food & bring the stroller right in.  SO much easier than the beach, & there is no sand for Waverly to eat.  LOVE!

4 - Momma & Mini Time - Without a doubt, the BEST part of this summer is the fact that I have been home with my girl all day, everyday.  It really has been nothing short of amazing, and I have cherished each & every FULL day that I have gotten to spend with her.  Counting down the days to my return is definitely a little sad, but I have to look at the bright side and how lucky I have been to have this second maternity leave (and can again count down the days to my third maternity leave next summer!).  In the meantime, we are taking advantage of these last days of summer in the best way we know how.

Yea, that happened.  I can't help myself, although I'm pretty sure my husband wished I could.  He is lucky it is pretty much impossible to find a polka dot shirt for a man, because if I could, there is a definite risk he would have been the third person in our matching photo. :)
(If you have the sudden urge to match your daughter, Waverly's dress is from GAP & mine is from H&M!)
Happy Monday, enjoy your day & these last days of summer!

Friday, August 9, 2013

This past Monday, my husband turned 31.  In other words, really old.  I keep reminding him how I am still rocking it in my 20s.
For three more weeks until my 30th, that is.
We started off by sending the birthday boy some well wishes.  In chalk, just like we do best.
Old Navy Vest
Also like every other holiday, we used the day as an excuse to make some yummy food for both Waverly Maye & the man of the day.  Breakfast consisted of eggs & bacon, and afternoon treats were fudge marble cupcakes.  It's safe to say that the cupcakes went over much better than the eggs, as expected.  This girl & her sweet tooth are so obviously my daughter.  She ate the cupcake right down to the liner, and then tried to eat that, too.
That night, Waverly attended her first baseball game!  A big moment, since I come from a family of baseball players.  Although I'm not sure how much of the game we actually watched, Waverly Maye obviously loved the crowds of people & the opportunity to be the crazy little lady she is.  She stayed up way past her bedtime, had her first cotton candy, and danced to the music in between the innings.  Every little girl's dream come true.
I am fairly sure that on my hubby's birthday last year, we were so sleep-deprived that we didn't know what day we were supposed to celebrate.  That ten-day old baby is now one, and the best present we have ever gotten.  We are so lucky to be celebrating with her this year, and every year to come!
Happy birthday to my husband, and happy Friday to all of you!  Enjoy your weekend. :)
